Painting SPN: Ruby's Knife

My Supernatural arsenal is almost complete! This is the third resin replica I've ordered from the Etsy store, The Road So Far, and I think it's just about done. Here's my version of Ruby's knife:

This was not an easy project, to be honest. It was very difficult to find a really good screenshot of the weapon, and I really think there are several knives that have been used over the years. The knife in "Lazarus Rising", for example, seems to have a sort of end cap on its handle that is secured with a pin. The version in "First Born" doesn't seem to have the pin, but does have a very different looking cap--almost like a piece of plastic that has been stretched over the end of the (antler-bone?) handle. Also, the replica, while very good in shape and detail, seems much larger in the handle than the onscreen knives. With all of that, and with much input from my husband, here's how it came together.

Base coat:

The blade is spray painted with Kryon's "Foil Metallic" Silver, which gave it a finish that looks like true metal. The bone handle is an acrylic craft paint called Bleached Sand.

My husband felt that the spray paint was too glossy, and encouraged me to take a fine scrub pad to it so that it looked more like forged steel. I thought this was good advice! I was careful to brush straight across the flat of the blade, one direction only, then "dirtied up" the runes and groove a bit with a dark gray ink, also his suggestion. I stopped short of adding red ink to the mix, though--I don't think that Dean or Sam would allow their weapons to stay bloody. Here's the dirtied blade:

And the handle, inked with brown:

For the final touches, we rubbed the handle with fine sandpaper, and then with leather, to give the impression of worn spots that occurred through years--centuries?--of use. Then I dry-brushed over the handle with a lighter tone to match the pommel and blade attachment:

All of which brings us here! While I'm far from an expert painter, I've enjoyed this challenge, and Ruby's knife will find a place next to my First Blade and Angel Blade in my office/hobby room/spare bedroom, where I'm sure it will cause guests to worry for my sanity--
