In my post about painting the First Blade replica, I mentioned that my main motivation for the project was to convince my husband to become Cain for a few hours for the con we recently attended. At first he was ambivalent and non-committal, but he did start to grow his hair a bit longer and groom his beard to approximate Cain's Civil War era look--we planned to use the scene from "First Blood", where the character breaks into the cabin hoping to to save his wife, as our inspiration.

Not being experienced cosplayers, we started pulling together bits and pieces of the wardrobe and modifying them. A tan linen shirt got bleached to an off-white, a belt got a holster made of scrap leather pieces, and so on. I knew that he was finally getting interested when he found a leather jacket and then took the extraordinary step (to my mind) of pulling out the dark brown decorative stitching that ran along all its seams, replacing it with a tone on tone leather cord. For my part, I promised that if he went as Cain, I would go as Colette, his wife. I don't think I carried it off as well in the end as my husband did, since I wasn't able to find a gray dress. Instead, I wore a period replica black dress with lace at the collar and a cameo, and hoped it would convey the idea of the woman in the portrait in Cain's living room.

Here we are, trying for a very formal selfie!

The costume contest on Saturday afternoon at the con, though we didn't place, was an interesting experience. We were divided into a junior category, a Castiel category, and then two groups of the rest of us. In the center of the stage when we went up were two competing Rowenas in long dresses and displaying plenty of attitude, while right next to my husband and me Sheriffs Jodi and Donna, the latter eating mini donuts and candy bars. My husband--sorry, Cain--took out the Blade and displayed it, crossing his arms so that he was holding it at attention, pointing it up towards his shoulder. I just took his arm as I thought a wife ought to do. In the end, though we got some applause and some compliments afterwards, our consolation prize was two photos, suitable for signing, of Sam and Dean.

Besides the Rowenas, a steampunk femme Cas, the sheriffs, a gym teacher, and a couple of Alfies, my favorite cosplay was a couple dressed as Dean and the Impala. He was a good likeness. She wore a silver fedora along with her black leather. And they were dancing at the edge of the stage, a slow jitterbug. It was charming.
