Just a little SPN display in the Library...We've geeked out the entire historical collection room as advertisement for our first Library Con in April, and this is my little corner. One thing I love about the Supernatural stuff is that, in contrast to the action figures, models, and jewelry that has been produced and marketed for other fandoms (casting no shade on the other collections, which I love, which take dedication to their shows and books, which also include funky and handmade items)--these items are largely fan-driven or produced. They come from Etsy stores, con vendors & experiences, or were made by fans and fan-adjacent artists. (The t-shirt quilt my cousin made, the weapons that I bought as plain resin replicas on Etsy and painted, the weapon stands that were 3-D printed by my co-worker Tammie, and painted by me.) Sure, there are some SPN Funko Pops, there are the books, the subscription boxes, the HotWheels Impala, etc, but for the most part, SPN merchandise is endearingly home-grown!

(I'm working on catching up!) In your own space, brag about yourself. Tell us what things you've done that you're proud of.

OK. Mostly I write SPN gen fanfic, but I also manage my library's book recommendation blog, and I have been known to paint miniatures and some Supernatural prop weapons. Here are a few recs, and a link to that blog: Read more... )

I put this together to sort of put Supernatural in the context of my life--looking at it now, it feels a bit self-indulgent, but I'm going to post it, anyway. Forgive me.

The show took over my life and plunged me into the online community. It also sparked my creativity, made me start writing again, well over 20 years since I graduated from college with an English/Writing degree. It even kickstarted our Geek Out programs at my Library, and gave me and my husband some memorable con-going trips.

We are so lucky to have had it for so long. Even more, we are blessed with a cast--Jared, Jensen, Misha, of course, but everyone else, too--who have given us so much of their time and treated us with respect and kindness. In spite of my tears today (yes, actual tears), I can't wait to see what they all do next.

That's all I want to say, really. I'm sure this feeling will come around again with the final chapter--just as I'm sure the Winchesters and Family will kick it in the ass.

Libraries are adapting to the pandemic, too, and one of the things we've been tasked with is to create videos for our Youtube channel. My boss took one look at my desk and asked me to do a series on "fandom". I've interviewed our local Art House Cinema art director, the chair of the state's biggest con, and then took a long shot and sent a query to Lynn Zubernis. To my surprise, she said yes! I'm still a bit not over it--I thought I'd post it here, should anyone like to take a look:

Hi, everyone!

I'd like to pick your brains for just a moment. As part of my job, I've been creating videos about fandoms--I've interviewed a cosplayer on our Library staff, and the art director of our local arthouse cinema, among other subjects (I reached out to Lynn Zubernis, too, and am hoping to talk to her next week!)

I've been toying with the idea of doing a short piece on fanworks, but I don't want to do the typical history of, or defense of, sort of thing. That's been done a lot. I'd like to talk about it from the fan's perspective. And you are the fan community that I know and love, so I'd love it if you were able to give me a few of your thoughts.

My general idea is to interpose some quotes with images, rather than doing an interview or documentary style. I will happily credit your blogs, if you like, or just as happily keep you anonymous, if I use a quote from you. If you have a moment, please think about--

What fandom first inspired you to seek out fanworks?
What was your first fanwork?
Does your process with fic or fanart differ from your other creative endeavors?
What draws you to fanworks?
What's your favorite genre in fanworks?

These are just prompts, of course. I'm interested in anything you might like to tell me about your experiences in the fanfic & fanart worlds.

Thanks for reading! I hope to hear from you, and when the project is complete, I will post it to my blog. <3

I'm up to posting a photo taken at least 10 years ago. I don't have much from that period on my computer, but here's one that I'm kinda fond of:

This is me and the boys collecting their Summer Reading coupons at our old library in 2009. This building no longer exists, as the city built a new library that we moved into in 2014. This desk stood somewhere in the middle of our new parking lot. I was still a page in the Circulation department at this point--I moved upstairs to Reference and began working on my MLS degree, with the library's blessing, a year later. What kills me about this photo though--of course--is my boys' faces. And their height. While I once towered over them, they now tower well over me. The little blond kid? He's 6'2" now.

*Sigh.

Hi! I don't think I've done anything like this on here before, but thanks to Dizzojay's December meme challenge, I'm going to get a bit personal here. I'll try to answer a question a day this month. I know, I'm a few days behind, but I hope to catch up this weekend. (Thanks, Dizzojay, for the questions!)

The first is to post a photo taken this year. Hmmm---

I rather like this one. It was taken during our end of Summer Reading party at the library. Please forgive the odd size; I cropped my co-worker out, not because she isn't adorable in the original photo, but to honor her privacy. The items on the table in front are some of our prizes for adults, and my smile is equal parts "happy to show off" and "I am so very glad it's over!"

For the past several years, I have been writing short reviews for my library's blog. My very first review , in fact, was for Supernatural, way back in '13, written while we were still in the midst of catch-up binging!

I've been lead coordinator of it for the last few, and I just finished a major updating project: changing the format, adding tags, author names, and comprehensive review lists for our staff writers. (Tags were harder than I thought they would be, especially coming up with a generalized vocabulary for them more or less on the fly!)

As I take a breath before moving on to my next task, I thought I would add a link to my personal page, should anyone be interested in reading these. (If you do read one, or if we covered a favorite book, movie, or tv show, let me know what you think!

My catalog of fanfic is not extensive, but I feel the need to gather it and put it all in one place. I'm also planning to use this as a general index of some of the better bits and pieces that I've posted over the now several years that I've had this journal (hey, I'm a librarian, this is kinda my thing!). So, without further ado:
