Am I just hanging out online, oblivious to this latest virtual sh**storm? Has anyone else heard of GamerGate? I just stumbled across this blog post from Felicia Day, whom I admire very much, about her fear of speaking out on this controversy or engaging other gamers--it's terrible and mortifying to read about ongoing harassment of women in the gaming community happening now, in 2014. If you read some of the comments below the piece from women gamers who have been subjected to sexual jibes and sexist "humor" after revealing their gender, you might be as appalled as I am right now.

I have never experienced such behavior in my gaming time, though I've had to put up with some crudity and mildly stalkerish behavior directed towards my avatars in the MMO I play. Perhaps this is because I generally play in the company of good friends. Not having experienced it does not lesson my personal outrage that others have, however. Nor does it make me less sad that gaming, which could and should be welcoming to all, harbors such vile behavior.

So, I'm doing what Day recommends. This is my way of Representing. This is my way of saying that this is not right and should not be tolerated in silence. This is me saying to my sons, "this is never ok."

I'm a female Gamer. Happy to be one. Happy to Represent.
